On 9/11 US shut down all air space, however planes that were already flying to Washington or NYC needed a place to land. The rescue came from a small Canadian town of Gander. The town was an important refueling center once, so the airport had the capacity to accept about 40 planes that anded there.
The people of Gander quickly made a shelter for the strangers and provided them with food and clothing. They also helped in contacting the realtives.
