Recent studies conducted by Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania indicate that if you do not sleep more than 5 hours continuously for 3-4 days, particular brain cells called locus ceruleus (LC) neurons start dying. The results are permanent. These cells are responsible for keeping you alert and awake. So the result of continuous lack of sleep is that you will find it harder and harder to keep you alert and awake.
